JEF Malta hosted two LGBTQ workshops for form 4 students (age 14/15) on the 2nd and 6th of December 2022. Each workshop had ~40 students in attendance, making a total of ~80 students. The goal of this workshop was to educate students about tolerance and acceptance of LGBTQ identities, and to make them aware of human rights violations in Europe. The aim was to make secondary schools a more open and LGBT-friendly place.
Activities in the workshop included a spectrum line exercise whereby a number of statements were read out and students had to stand in a line depending on whether they agreed or disagreed. Students were asked why they held their respective opinions and this fostered discussions amongst them. It also included a game where we used a map to mark all the countries in Europe with homophobic and transphobic legislation. Furthermore, a team quiz with LGBTQ trivia was included.
We also showed the children a number of informative videos about LGBTQ rights in Europe, and provided them with anonymous questionnaires and feedback forms so that we could measure progress and analyse results.
